The river is running constantly at summer low and the farmers irigateing along the Tweed and Till valleys are not helping matters, large numbers of Sea Trout are now in the system with most running up the Till which is famous for its large runs. One angler that I spoke to had caught 18 Sea Trout upto 8ld and 1 Salmon in a day and he reconed it was his best ever days fishing. The numbers of Salmon in the river is at an altime low and even the 4 comercial netting stations are getting very few. Tillmouth had a 26lb Salmon and have had Sea Trout upto 14 lb this week.

Tweed current conditions (updated weekly)

We have had some fresh rainfall this week (20th) which only put the levels up by 10 inches, weed is a bad problem as is the stone dirt and the weather forcast is for lots of dry spells for the next couple of weeks. Most of the people employed in the Tweed Valley are more than a little concerned with regard to the stability of thier employment as no beat can afford to keep people emplyed on an anual basis with so few bookings coming in and a real lack of fish.

Specialist Fly Tying

I employ 2 private fly tiers, Alex Griffin based in Ayrshire and Tom Davis who works as a guillie on the Lower Birgham beat on Tweed. Both men are specialists in different fields Alex has fished most of the rivers on the West coast of Scotland as well as many river systems in Ireland, his flies are fairly lightly dressed and suit the smaller spate rivers. Although his new range of coneheads are truly brilliant. I now have a good stock of flies by Alex and if you phone 01289382260 I can give advice to some of his new scandinavian patterns. Tom Davis has worked on the river Tweed for many years and ties some brillint patterns not found anywhere else, Tom ties solely for tweedsalmonfly and I have had great success with several of Tom's patterns, one of his latest creations is a Junction Shrimp with the jungle cock eyes painted flurecent orange which works realy well when the river has a little colour. Custom tied flies from both men are available on request.
