Tweed Salmon Flies

Tweed Salmon Fly CO is based in Norham -on-Tweed and is run by David Foreman who has lived and fished the Tweed for over 35 years, he has some great contacts and can give advice on tactics and fly patterns currently being used or what you can expect to need for your trip on the Tweed or any other of the many Scottish rivers. David has also fished on several rivers in Norway most recently the Gaola where he had 4 salmon upto 26lb.

With the fresh water arriving at the end of October the river has finally seen a rise in water hieghts, huge numbers of fresh Salmon have been running the river with several over the magical 30lb mark, most beats above Tillmouth are experiensing very good weeks at last. Many of the fresh fish are small grilse which should have entered the river in August or at the latest September which is a little alarming for the future.

Tweed current conditions (updated weekly)

The river is now steady at 1ft 6in over summer low and running very clear, rain is however forecast for the coming weekend (16th nov)and will put all the lower beats out of action for several more days.

Specialist Fly Tying

I employ 2 private fly tiers, Alex Griffin based in Ayrshire and Tom Davis who works as a guillie on the Lower Birgham beat on Tweed. Both men are specialists in different fields Alex has fished most of the rivers on the West coast of Scotland as well as many river systems in Ireland, his flies are fairly lightly dressed and suit the smaller spate rivers. Although his new range of coneheads are truly brilliant. I now have a good stock of flies by Alex and if you phone 01289382260 I can give advice to some of his new scandinavian patterns. Tom Davis has worked on the river Tweed for many years and ties some brillint patterns not found anywhere else, Tom ties solely for tweedsalmonfly and I have had great success with several of Tom's patterns, one of his latest creations is a Junction Shrimp with the jungle cock eyes painted flurecent orange which works realy well when the river has a little colour.
